Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born on April 4th, 1972. Scott was raised an only daughter by her maternal grandmother. Scott went to the Philadelphia High School for Girls and after she graduated she entered Temple University. Scott was a student in secondary school while also working at two positions. She was hoping to become an high school English teacher. It was impossible to realize this dream when, after completing three years of study while working as a teacher assistant, she left college. When she began her professional career, singing at poetry events, she eventually teamed up Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me, their collaborative song was written by the duo. In a Roots show, she revealed her artist status. The show led to collaborations with Eric Benet Will Smith Common. She was able to perform during the Canada Tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She signed as the label's first artist.
